Tips to get your parrot to talk

So many more people are beginning to adopt parrots than they did just a few years ago. Often times, a large number of these people don’t understand the care and patience which must be allowed their pets in order for them to be happy and healthy for many years to come. While owning a parrot can be a lot of hard work, it is also very rewarding as you will have a trusting companion for life. One of the hardest things to do is to get your parrot to begin speaking. While it is tough at first, it can be done with a small amount of patience and devotion to your pet.

One of the best ways to get your parrot to speak is to start slow with just a word or two. When parrots are young, it is very difficult to get them to mimic. Once they reach the age of 2 and onward, it is almost impossible to get them to stop talking. Start slow and take several weeks to teach your bird a small word or two until you see him begin to mouth it. Eventually, he will start making noise and over the course of a few weeks, he’ll begin to expertly say the word over and over. Once he has that word down, start with something a little harder and repeat the process until he begins adding words to his permanent vocabulary. Also, let your parrot perch on your shoulder and watch television with you. He will begin to mimic what he sees on TV and this will help the process greatly.

Just remember to give your bird plenty of time and don’t give up on him. Keep trying and you will be having conversations with your parrot in no time.
