What Do Parrots Eat

Parrots, like their owners, enjoy a wide variety of foods. Some people offer their parrots a basic feed mix, which can be purchased in sticks, biscuits, or pellets. Medium size morsels or pellets are suitable for Amazon parrots. Basic feed mixes may contain some combination of oat groats, corn, flax, wheat, soybean, egg, and split pea. Using a basic feed mix results in a cleaner cage, as there are not a large quantity of shells and hulls strewn about. Be sure to offer your parrot on a formulated diet plenty of fresh water, as dry pellets and morsels will increase thirst.

Many parrots however, will prefer a diet consisting primarily of seeds, because of the variety it offers. Your parrot will need to have his seeds supplemented with fresh fruit, vegetables, animal protein, and calcium. The additional fruits and veggies will insure he gets sufficient phytonutrients and anti-oxidants to bolster his immune system.

Your parrot can eat almost all fruits and veggies, except for avocado. Brocolli, beans, potatoes, peppers, peaches, plums, and apples are good choices. He will also need dark, leafy greens, and other sources of Vitamin A such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and mango. Your parrot does not need his fruit and veggies chopped up, and will enjoy nibbling away at a piece of lettuce or zucchini, dangling from a string.

Good sources of animal protein include nuts, cheese, cooked egg, chicken, and fish. Your Amazon parrot will also enjoy these heated a few seconds in the microwave.
